FIRST FRUITS FARM: HCLC Helps on Sunday, September 13, 2015

Let's face it: while the food on the dollar menu at McDonald's may be cheap, it is not a sustainable, healthy choice. Yet, people who live in poverty are forced to choose the cheaper alternative because fresh fruits and vegetables are more far more costly than their tight budgets allow.

First Fruits Farm, located in the green rolling hills of Freeland, Maryland, is a Christian ministry dedicated to providing those in need with nutritious, farm-fresh produce. This ministry has grown from an eight acre farm to nearly 200 acres! On "God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday" folks from Holy Communion Lutheran Church helped harvest a bountiful crop of Macintosh and Winesap apples (104 crates!). Our youngest members harvested the lowest bearing fruit, while sneaking a few bites from that special hand-picked apple that served as a test of quality assurance. Those who were a little braver climbed ladders to reach the apples that had been kissed more closely by the sun’s rays in the treetops.

We may not get to see who will enjoy those tasty apples, but-- through God’s work--we are connected. From the hands that plowed to the hands that harvested and finally to those who received, by God’s hands we all are fed.

Throughout Lent we focused on nails as symbols of our sin. Pastor John nails these sins into the cross. Pastors Wiener and Burk lead the palm-bearing throng into Jerusalem as the gathers sing "All Glory Laud and Honor."

Pentecost Mobile:

This mobile represents the Holy Spirit as it descended upon the apostles in Jerusalem at Pentecost. The book of Acts says "Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them and a tongue rested on each of the." Fire is power. It creates warmth, boils water for our food, cooks our protein and powers our cars. Fire also creates light. Like the sun, fire provides energy and color. The spirit is God's "free-moving power" in the created world. The spirit moves us and as Jesus said, "... it goes where it wills ..." It is an independent force creating goodness and love among us. The paper lanterns are symbols of that power and their floating, gossamer movements remind us of the pillar of flame which led the Hebrew people in Sinai's desert.
